Randall Terry predicts/threatens violence resulting from what he judges as an unacceptable policy/legislation, which in fact is legitimate and the result of democratic process and rule of law.

The line he walks is between prediction and threat and he is a coward to stand squarely between them becuase he won’t risk civil disobedience by following his conscience and making it an unambiguous threat, which is his druthers. He is a terrorist to threaten violence and mayhem as a direct response to the practice he “righteously” abhors but which is well-grounded in the law.

Randall Terry wants to operate outside the norms of a civil society and he does. We are worried about that because of the people he might incite to do lethal violence. I guess we have to live with it as we do all of the threats to our safety.

As a psychologist, I firmly believe that though Randall Terry and his ilk did not pull the trigger, they did put the bullet in the gun and cock the hammer.

However, I don’t believe this can be addressed with criminalizing the activities of the likes of Terry. Instead, I believe these issues should be addressed in civil courts. The Southern Poverty Law Center has been successful in this respect, and I believe provides a model for redressing these issues.

Don’t fret about the National Press Club. The press club rents space for press conferences, and I have no doubt that this is Randall Terry’s arrangement. It would be a mistake to assume that his appearance means anything more to them than a fee for service.

And I don’t think the news media will be swayed by the surroundings considering the buffoonish spectacle Terry made of himself the last time he appeared there.

In the first clip, Terry denies his movements culpability in Tiller’s murder, then immediately turns around and says he basically got what he deserved—-”Pro-life leaders and the pro-life movement are not responsible for George Tiller’s death. George Tiller was a mass-murderer and, horrifically, he reaped what he sowed.”

When he was finished with his speech, Terry invited members of the press to join him out for for chicken wings and beer noting—-”I like Guinness for those of you who want to have a beer somewhere. I prefer my chicken wings really hot and a little crispy.”

Murder, beer, and chicken wings. Yep, that sure smells like gravitas to me.

Honestly, they need to ask GOP lawmakers what they think of this and make them answer on the record. Their silence only legitimizes Terry and his ilk and, worse, legitimizes the violent actions taken in their name.
