SCOTUS: Rush/GOP Say Protect The Wealthy And The Powerful By Torpedoing Sotomayor

The stupid, it burns.  I expected a redux of the infamous Helms’ "Hands" ad as part of the GOP response to the Sotomayor nomination to SCOTUS, but this is above and beyond the call of putrid:

Context is a canard for Limbaugh, who compared Sotomayor to former Klan leader and Republican politician David Duke. Gingrich called her a "Latina woman racist." Buchanan called Sotomayor, a graduate of Princeton and Yale law school and an appointee of GOP President George H.W. Bush, a . . . duh! . . . affirmative-action baby!

The WaPo hits similar notes in calling out GOP tactical idiocy with racial overtones.

I’d say that GOP pundits and politicos had jumped the shark, but I’m not even certain they know where the limits of ethical, sane discourse are any longer. Rush Limbaugh really has been Exhibit A:

Rush declared that he has never been an "oppressed minority," even though he is a member of one, because conservatism is an "oppressed minority." Rush added: "If ever a civil rights movement was needed in America, it is for the Republican Party. If ever we needed to start marching for freedom and constitutional rights, it’s for the Republican Party. The Republican Party is today’s oppressed minority, and it know[s] how to behave as one." The GOP, Rush continued, know to go to the "back of the bus" and drink from the right water fountain. Rush then assured us that he is an "intellectual," whereas Obama is a "narcissist." And just in case you’re not sure what that means, Rush elaborated: "He’s like Narcissus." Washington, D.C., Rush concluded, is the "Old South" for Republicans, and they are comfortable being an "oppressed minority."

Because, as we all know, the politically powerful and the wealthy have no means of protecting themselves whatsoever. They depend on op-ed blowhards, radio mouthpieces and the dastardly tricksterism of a whole class of political operatives, a cadre of favor-granting lobbyists and the best lawyers money can buy to protect their rights and interests.

Pretty much anything the rest of us do, right? *snerk*

Oppressed? This is delusional & hysterical….just call the Bushes oppressed. Or Chief Justice Roberts or James Baker etc etc etc. To the extent these folks are becoming the minority…Narcissus nails it. Just look in the mirror and blame your lying selves. Bring Rove and Alberto and let them try to tell us how great, smart men of integrity they are. What a way to starty the day, CHS. A malevolent fantasy land.

Yes, the last eight years of greed and “mine, mine, mine” are all in our heads. And the results of those policies dragging the entire nation through a crap pile? It’s our fault.

Anyone else getting the “pay no attention to the man behind the curtain” feel from the GOP?

JimWhite | Tuesday June 2, 2009 06:14 am 3

What possible evidence could Rush have that he is an “intellectual”?

Because he can forge an Oxycontin prescription?

“I’m a dittohead” makes me a thinker?

Sheesh!

Badwater | Tuesday June 2, 2009 06:22 am 4

Republics have long been working to be a small, southern party. Limpy is just one of their tools for getting there.

JLML | Tuesday June 2, 2009 06:22 am 5

If the Republican ideal is that background shouldn’t influence decisions then why have diversity on the bench at all? Let’s aim for a Supreme Court entirely of Latina women. Or can only old white men be entirely neutral, a blank slate?
Hypocrisy thy name is Republican.

I am reminded of the children’s book where the zoo animals take off their skins when they go to bed and sometimes trade “clothes” with each other for show to fool the public. For Republicans (and naive liberals) diversity is so often only a matter of show for the entertainment of zoo goers.

foothillsmike | Tuesday June 2, 2009 06:23 am 6

Rush can bloviate for hours and the rethugs kiss his ass therefore he are an intellectual and I have a valuable bridge property for sale.

Oh, he’s talking about conservatives. I knew there was no shortage of fat, pink, cowardly big-mouths in the country.

I’m waiting for comments from the Rethug Senators Sotomayor is going to meet with shortly. Reality is a different universe for them.

Off to swim in the great capitalist cesspool.

With Randall Terry in the news once again mayhaps I’ll tweek the boss, who was a huge supporter of Schiavo’s parents and their greedy endeavour.

Be good to yourselves, and all other living things.

Namaste

SIGH, indeed.

I need to spend most of the day on my mower and there are literally clouds of mosquitoes at my windows and doors. I guess I’ll shower in repellent and then get going. At least the bloodsucking Republicans aren’t as numerous as those little beasts at my window…

WarOnWarOff | Tuesday June 2, 2009 06:31 am 17

Goes to why and how the corporations sought to become legal “persons” by invoking the 13th Amendment. They wuz oppressed!

alank | Tuesday June 2, 2009 06:33 am 18

Because these asshats keep showing up on pundit shows and the media needs a smackdown for not calling them out on this crap. And because it’s building to the next post in line here today.

And because my child is graduating from kindergarten this morning and I needed a post topic and this was the first thing that caught my eye.

SouthernDragon | Tuesday June 2, 2009 06:35 am 20

You have no idea. Terry Schiavo’s parents rent through us and we, because of boss, were in the thick of things. Boss and wife were outnumbered by the rest of the place. He was furious when he found out some of us had met with Michael to support him. Randall T’s name came up way too often for my liking. Like everything else, it was all about money.

Recently I had a conversation with a friend (on some other topic entirely) who observed that the problem with the law declaring corporations “persons” is that real persons have finite lifetimes, but corporations don’t. And his analysis was that corporations are born, are productive for a time, but rather than decline and die like people do, they become institutions that lose their creativity and flexibility and become focused on their own survival long beyond their time. Fits with my observation of ‘em.

reply to alank @18: Indeed. I have completely lost interest in hearing mental midgets challenge the intellectual heft of a truly accomplished person and actual racists attempt to taint someone with made up shit that describes them more than her. Good news is that it just continues to make them look like the fools and assholes they are…in case anyone had missed it.

There is just too much hate in the world. Too many people want us to be afraid. I will not fear and I will not hate back.
Christy, best wishes for a wonderful graduation this morning. I’m so glad you can celebrate your daughter’s achievements. Hugs to all the Redds today.

OFF TOPIC –

Senate Armed Services Committee hearing just starting.

Live streaming HERE:

http://armed-services.senate.gov/Webcasts.htm

From opening statements, it looks like McChrystal is going to have to answer at least a few questions about torture under his command.

hackworth1 | Tuesday June 2, 2009 06:52 am 29

If ever we needed to start marching for freedom and constitutional rights, it’s for the Republican Party.

Oddly, Rush cheered for Dick and Dubya as they eviscerated our ‘constitutional rights’ under the guise of fightin’ terra and protecting our freedom. Rush advocates this Republican credo – in order to protect our freedoms , many freedoms must be taken away.

Unfortunately, Obama seems to advocate the same position.

Constitutional rights? Really? Republicans have attacked the entire document that is The Constitution. President C Plus Augustus said its just a goddamn piece of paper.

Bob Herbert is must reading today. He really hits his mark talking about the racist spewings of the reTHUG elite white males. Good on him.

JoeBuddha | Tuesday June 2, 2009 06:57 am 32

Wow. When Norquist talked about drowning the government in a bathtub, I never DREAMED he really meant the Republican Party!

DrDick | Tuesday June 2, 2009 07:00 am 33

I’m not even certain they know where the limits of ethical, sane discourse are any longer.

That is because for a very long time there have been no limits on rightwing speech. Anything they said was OK and newsworthy. The fact that our corporate media has not seen fit to call them on their blatant eliminationism, racism, and general over the top hate speech has produced this phenomenon.

McChrystal is going to have to answer at least a few questions about torture under his command.

NPR pointed out that McChrystal is connected to the Tillman death and excessive interrogation (or some other sugar-coated term for torture of the enemy). Since McC is Obama’s choice, it is NPR’s duty to point these things out. Can’t Obama find anyone with the qualifications and less baggage?

The Republicans will eat their own. McC will be maligned. Anyone Obama chooses would be likewise maligned. Why does Obama need to promote the SOB who helped cover up the Tillman fragging and supervised torture?

Hey, I’m with you. I wish my daughter were here to take me….I have been oddly puny for several days, still waiting for a dr. report, actually. But for me, ginger beer helps a whole lot!! I keep finding it in odd places and asked my grocery to replenish.

I saw your note the other day about your DC daughter. One day, give us an update. Have a good outing with your mom. I hope all is OK ;))

If I lived near you, I’d drive you. *g* My mom had a bad car crash last year and we convinced her not to buy another car. So, unless I want to be a brat and say, Hey, take a cab, I am the designated driver. My mom makes me a little nuts, but I just have to stay calm. She’s not as right-wing crazy conservative as she was while I was growing up; thank God she’s mellowed. Hopefully, her yapping at me about a bunch of stuff I don’t care about will take my mind off of the current hate news that I find myself ruminating on.

Knut | Tuesday June 2, 2009 08:03 am 40

Rush is incredible. The sad thing is he has an audience. My brother-in-law, who is a long-distance trucker, listens to him to keep from driving off the road. He’s a smart guy, but that much swill infects the brain, and his is definitely infected. I have another colleague who started out as a contrarian, and morphed into a Limbaugh. It’s a whirlpool of crap, and it sucks them in.

Knut | Tuesday June 2, 2009 08:07 am 41

To move on, I think it has hit home to the Limp-paws and other Thugs that Obama is not an easy mark the way the Clinton’s were, and it is driving them even more nutso than they were when the started. That’s why all this violence is coming out of the woodwork. When they could just push people around with words, they didn’t have to go to the mattresses (well most of the time not). There will be more panic before things get better. They are past denial, and are now in anger. What’s the next stage, bargaining? What have they got to give?

Enjoy…When my mom was aging, giving up her car was way harder than when she moved out of her house. She had driven always with courage & care; never an accident. I think she continued to always miss her car. I think I am getting to be the opposite. I look forward to finding a way to be without a car….not now, as my work requires a car. Just listen politely ;)) she will be soo happy. Just had my epsom bath. Thanks
