A darwinian view would probably posit some survival value in the mechanism that allows us to dehumanize those with whom we disagree. It allows those with the gene to savage and destroy competitive tribes and expand their “habitat”.

There is a mechanism in humans that encourages us to turn differences in opinion, belief, lifestyle, etc. into “moral issues” which conveniently turns one’s opponent from “misguided” to “evil, dirty, loathsome, and disgusting”..This mechanism allows us to treat them in ways that we would never support without the happy little mechanism.

Lizard attack because they are hungry its rational. The GOP attacks because they are hooked on anger and like being angry all the time.
Emotional responses I assume come from the lizard brain. Maybe in evolution the attack response got wired up to anger, adrenaline, and the brain’s pleasure centers.
Do humans overload their pleasure centers in various ways because we have the opportunity too? Or perhaps because we might be more able to over load them?
