Food Watch: Pistachios Now On The “Don’t Eat” List

This message brought to you by the "fergawdsakes, what food is scaring the bejeebers out of people this week" list.

Sadly, pistachios appear to have some risk for salmonella. Maybe. So, to be on the safe side, avoid them for now.

And it isn’t just the nuts in the shells. According to the FDA, you should avoid all foods containing pistachios, too, until they pinpoint the source of this latest salmonella scare.

Sorry to put a crimp in your March Madness baklava and pistachio ice cream plans, but there you are.

FDA will make a list of products to avoid available here shortly. Just FYI…

May be the FDA should just post a list of foods we *don’t* have to avoid eating…..that outghta save a lot of time for whoever’s having to do the ~~typing~~ keyboarding (oops, showing my age there) for posting purposes.

I have a whole bunch of shelled, un-dyed, lovely fresh pistashios, purchased on a weekly basis at my local farmers’ market from a known, small, family farm. I’m eatin’ em!

You lucky thang, you! Where do you live? Our Farmers Markets don’t open until May, and in we’re in a warm zone.

On a less happy note — I’m watching the Frontline on US Health Care – my, it’s depressing and infuriating. I see even Massachusetts (well, their residents) has run into the same problem as individuals trying to get COBRA—you must buy healthcare, but you can’t afford it. Jeez.

Anyway, hurray for local pistachios!
