Sen. Cornyn Can Kiss My X Chromosomes

Just double checking: this is still 2009, right? Because this is beyond ludicrous and insulting:

Although Ms. Johnsen is a well-regarded scholar and spent five years in leadership roles at the OLC under the Clinton administration — one and a half of those years as head — Republicans were quick to dismiss her qualifications. The low point of the hearing took place when Senator Cornyn (R-TX) suggested that Ms. Johnsen shouldn’t head the OLC because she lacked the "requisite seriousness" needed for the job.

Yes, as we all know, Ms. Johnson’s boobies and uterus call her analytical abilities into question. Damn her X chromosomes for making her such an unserious lightweight.

Not like super-mucho-qualified manly folk like Alberto Gonzales, about whom Cornyn said:

I’m pleased to be here today to introduce Judge Alberto Gonzales to this committee. He is a talented lawyer, a dutiful public servant and a good man. He’s a great Texan and an inspiring American success story, as you, Mr. Chairman, have already alluded.

Oh yeah, Gonzales’ awesomeness was clearly unparalleled. That’s why he’s still looking for a damned job because even his old firm won’t take him back.

Look, Cornyn is and always has been a bit of a swaggering ass.

But to say that Dawn Johnson isn’t serious enough for the job after all of her experience doing it? Coming from Cornyn, whose tenure as AG of Texas was rife with Jack Abramoff and Ralph Reed self-dealing, that’s awfully rich. I agree with Nan Aron of AFJ:

Senator Cornyn rejected a highly qualified nominee, citing a reason he never would have relied on with a male candidate. Beyond the blatant double-standard, his justification doesn’t pass the laugh test. Dawn Johnsen is exceptionally qualified. She is a highly regarded law professor and legal scholar. She served in a leadership role in the Office of Legal Counsel for five years, and acted as the head of that office for over a year. Her nomination has been routinely praised by some of the most respected lawyers and legal professionals in the nation.

"Senator Cornyn, however, gave full-throated support to Alberto Gonzales to be attorney general of the United States. And let us not forget his support for previous head of the Office of Legal Counsel Jay Bybee, who authored torture memos later repudiated by the Department of Justice. The primary qualification possessed by these men was an inability to say no to the White House.

Coming from a man whose last re-election campaign used a commercial so ludicrous that it still makes me laugh out loud at his unserious gooberlicious self-worship?  John Cornyn can kiss my X chromosomes.

Sure, make light of the Senator for saying that Dawn Johnson lacks seriousness, but remember to give him due credit.
Few people in the Senate have had the integrity necessary to champion the cause of marital equality for box turtles.

The good senator feels threatened by smart and ethical women. He likes them in their place, you know, the kitchen or bedroom.

Big John, indeed.

Keep it up re. Cornyn….or find the famous quote from Molly Ivins…”he’s a good looking sonavabitch” (no other qualifications mentioned.) He is so smug and irrelevant….maybe his exit will be not far behind Gonzo.

I read the post at least twice….did he give any reason for his objections? ;)

TX used to give us folks like LBJ and Sam Rayburn. What has happended?

And as irrational as it is of me – heck, expecting some level of respect in a Senate proceeding – I will never not feel bristling anger at him for his grotesque in-person smearing of John Dean in ‘07.

He is not a hatchet, nor is he a scalpel. He is a rusty 2-man lumberjack rig. He was born to it, it seems.

Yes, if only Dawn didn’t take the ethics of OLC so seriously and the need to restore its intellectual rigor and commitment to justice and precedent so seriously. Plus, she reads too much and is conversant in relevent case law. Boooooooring.

Cujo359 | Thursday March 19, 2009 02:07 pm 56

While it’s quite possible that Sen. Cornyn’s reasoning has to do with Ms. Johnsen’s lack of a Y chromosome, there’s another prejudice that could explain this. Johnsen has been outspoken in her opposition to the use of torture and warrantless (?) extraordinary rendition by the United States. Such people are not considered “serious” by many folks in DC, and you can count Cornyn as being one of those folks.

eCAHNomics | Thursday March 19, 2009 02:09 pm 57
In response to Cujo359 @ 56

Thanks for bringing that up. I had meant to ask what the hidden motive was before I got distracted by the Molly Ivins comment. Do you think it’s the torture thing? Is there any other reason?

If there are other reasons, I’m not aware of them. I try never to put myself in the frame of mind of people like Cornyn. It’s a painful form of introspection. This one just struck me as obvious.

The only dirty trick the GOP hates or would hesitate to use is the one it hasn’t thought up yet.

Dawn Johnsen, of course, is eminently qualified for this position. That’s what these rube Republicans are afraid of. Under her leadership, the OLC might once again do its job, which it hasn’t done for eight years. More than keep O’s administration on the legal side of the playground, it might document and reveal eight years of misdeeds by her recent predecessors. Since that might put a few GOP bigwigs in jail, expect them to conclude that smearing a few responsible lawyers to be a no-brainer, just like water boarding.

Kudos to Christy for calling them out. Where is the echo from the MSM? Or can we expect to hear repetition after repetition of Cornyn’s remarks with no rebutall? Oh, and Cornyn’s blind support for slow-witted, tail-bobbing Alberto Gonzales demonstrates that being “eminently qualified” is not a concept he cares much about.

Bingo! Sexism may be the tactic, but the motivation is that Johnson has clearly (as compared to the wishy-washiness of Eric Holder) shown contempt for the Dick Cheney view of executive power and privilege. If the unseriousness of womanhood is the best attack the GOP can muster against someone who recognizes the intended role of OLC, to offer clear guidelines with which the executive branch must legally comply, then perhaps that is a good sign. In fact, I wonder if what came across as male chauvinism was really more of the same nonsense about how anyone who would dare to smear any current or past (Republican) president with accusations of criminality must simply be some kind of dirty hippy.

KeyserSoze | Thursday March 19, 2009 09:43 pm 72

As the proud owner of an X chromosome of my own (just the one), I share your indignation. But please–don’t even jest about letting such a person kiss any part of you. There is surely nothing that would not be much too good for this mollusc. I can only say, “Yech.”

tejanarusa | Thursday March 19, 2009 11:44 pm 74

Sigh. Cornyn is so embarrassing (for Texans). There was a time, when he was a mere District Judge, that he seemed to be intelligent and reasonable.

I guess he just hadn’t had the opportunity yet to reveal what an a–h—/idiot he really was. Possibly, even, he hadn’t yet become such a party-line-spouting-verbal-mimeograph knee-jerk “agin-er” of everything of value.

Sadly, I was not surprised he was re-elected. Noriega was outgunned, especially financially. And of course, he had a small disadvantage in time to campaign, given he was on active reserve (or was it Nat’l Guard?) duty during the campaign.
On behalf of my adopted state, I apologize to everyone else once again for the “distinguished” Senator.
