Pull Up A Chair…

This morning, I’m asking for your help.

Those of you who’ve been around here a while know that this is my least favorite part of blogging, but here goes:

I know this comes at a time when a lot of folks are struggling.  But the same economy that’s caused budget uncertainty for a lot of folks?  It has also caused our ad revenues and donations to falter as well the last few weeks as everyone’s budget tightens up.

Paying for hamster chow to keep the servers humming along nicely takes some money.

And we do try to keep things humming along at a "snarky, yet satisfying" rate.

We’ve been very lucky in that a few amazing human beings have donated to the site which enabled us to do some upgrades to server speeds and some other fix-ups and payments as well which keep this site humming right along with nary a hitch most days.

But without regular, steady in-flow, it’s tough for Jane and I to plan to keep the server hamsters running. And believe me when I say, the hamsters aren’t cheap.

We don’t want to have to deal with server hiccups or outages, but without some chip-in help, it’s a possibility.  And we certainly want to keep on blogging rather than lose our oversight and snark capabilities altogether.  Which is why I’m bringing this up before that happens.

I’m asking you for a donation.  Today, if at all possible.

If you can afford it, we’d really appreciate it. We promise to put it to good and immediate use.  And if you can’t, believe me when I say we completely understand and appreciate that you even think about it at all.  Thank you.

If you have a business that hasn’t depleted its advertising budget, we’d love an ad.  We have an awesome demographic of readership.  (you! — hint, hint)

We’ve also gotten things set up to take a recurring donation or, if you prefer, you can snail mail to:

The Fire Dog Lake Company
6312 Seven Corners Center
Suite #333
Falls Church, VA 22044

Thanks so very, very much.  As long-time regulars know, I hate asking for money.  I really, really hate it. But I’m hoping folks can chip in a bit and that we can all get through the downturn as together as possible.

While everyone is contemplating this, how about clicking on the lovely ads on the page?  That would be wonderful of you to do also.  Frequently.  As in, whenever you visit, because every click-thru helps.

That said, what’s up with you? Do tell. Pull up a chair…

Good morning Christy!

what a dear little hamster.

Millineryman | Saturday March 14, 2009 05:16 am 2

Good Morning Christy and Elliot

Well my first act of the day was a donation. Now to get coffee and perhaps a donut.

yumMmm, make mine glazed.

How’s the play going?

joelmael | Saturday March 14, 2009 05:18 am 4

I’m in. Didn’t know regular folks are taking a hit too, thought it was just the banks we have to worrry about.

BTW I guess the survey popups are about ad revenue. Is it important for us to fill them in? I do once in a while, fun to pretend I’m a big spender.

phred | Saturday March 14, 2009 05:21 am 5

Done. Thanks for all the great work all of you do here Christy. I’ll do what I can to keep the hamsters happy ; )

You got it. It’s going ok I guess. I haven’t really been back since opening night. There’s lots of drama going on here keeping my occupied.

Waccamaw | Saturday March 14, 2009 05:25 am 7

Mornin’, Christy -

It may bother you to ask for bucks but I’m willing to bet it doesn’t bother pups at all….we all gotta hang float together. *g* I don’t do on-line money stuff but there will be a check in the mail Monday.

The weather isn’t cooperating (overcast and chilly) but I’m back on the coast for the year and looking forward to cranking up gardening. The pots of pansies didn’t fare too well over the winter without faucet water so I’m heading out today in hopes of finding more. Most people here plant them in-ground in the fall and they do just fine but potting is pushing the package a little so there may not be much available in the garden stores. Hope it warms up soon because there are lots of little seeds in starter pots that could use a strong shot of sun.

oldnslow | Saturday March 14, 2009 05:26 am 8

Good morning, Christy and pups.

Cbl and I are in for a 10 this morning. We would like it to be more but you are right, times are tough.

Hope you and yours are well this morning.

Elliott | Saturday March 14, 2009 05:28 am 9

Hmm, I didn’t see an option for sunflower seeds

solai | Saturday March 14, 2009 05:29 am 10

I’m in. And I clicked through on a few ads as well. I’d be lost without FDL.

JohnAnderson | Saturday March 14, 2009 05:30 am 11

Morning, Christy,
Waccamaw is right: No prob here.
A lot of us would say that you and Jane and the rest of the team are just doing God’s work.
I think that will suffice.
Contribution is on its way.

Bluetoe2 | Saturday March 14, 2009 05:31 am 12

Christy, why not let the Lakers know how much is needed. BuzzFlash let’s everyone know how much they need to raise each month. It’s nice to have that benchmark. Hope my donation helps. Not as much as I would like to donate but all that I can afford to donate right now.

solai | Saturday March 14, 2009 05:33 am 13

So, I hear that Olberman and Rachel didn’t exactly cover the Stewart/Cramer story to anyone’s satisfaction. I missed all tv last night (and web-surfing as well). Although I did keep hearing whoops from the living room from the men in my house watching Syracuse basketball.

foothillsmike | Saturday March 14, 2009 05:37 am 14

Morning Christy and all, will be enroute after I get sand out of my eyes and coffee in system.

They are about ad revenue — the various ad networks that run ads online depend on Nielson information to decide where and when to place some ads. So thanks for filling those out! :)

dmac | Saturday March 14, 2009 05:45 am 19

especially tight money-wise right now, but i am ‘chipping in’ to the pile…if you were here and needed something, i would drop what i was doing and find a way to help..i like that you let us know when you really need the money, so i can help then. i wish it were more, am always willing to help when the coffers are low. i guess every little bit helps.

i have learned that people not asking for help is as bad as asking too often for help. either scenario someone is worrying. don’t want you guys to worry.

usually when teddy is around i say–ok teddy, waving money around….

couldn’t remember the proportions for hummus, so, found this yesterday. middle eastern cooking quick and easy youtubes..i made some last night and it IS the best hummus i have ever eaten..ate it with warmed ezekiel bread. am eating broccoli with it right now. yes, it is that good that i am eating it for breakfast. i used dried mint, 1/4 c tahini and 1/3 whole yogurt..i used bottled lemon juice too….her baba ghanoush is dead-on, too.better than my recipe.

Thanks so much. We work very hard to not have to ask for donations — and we have a really great ad revenue system now that works well when people are actually buying ads. But that’s dropped off tremendously the last couple of months for everyone online because pretty much all businesses are tightening their budgets.

The thing that always baffles me is that we have a LOT of readers on the blog, and we get very few publishing ads. You’d think there would be more given the demographic potential. But I’m not an ad person, so how would I know? *g*

would you explain again why and how they help?

Elliott | Saturday March 14, 2009 05:58 am 25
In response to Waccamaw @ 22

as a matter of fact it is:
Hummus with Meat is a variation of the traditional hummus dish.

Hummus or hummus bi tahini (Arabic: حُمُّص) also spelled hamos, houmous, hommos, hommus, hummos, hummous or humus) is a dip or spread made of blended chickpeas, sesame tahini, lemon juice, and garlic.

Recipe

2 cups traditional prepared hummus – see Dede’s hummus video recipe
1/2 tsp paprika
1/2 lb. ground beef
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 tsp black pepper
1/4 tsp seven spices
1 tbs. butter
1/2 cup pine nuts
1 tbs. chopped parsley
1/3 cup extra virgin olive oil

Spread prepared hummus in a flat dish. Sprinkle paprika on top. In a skillet brown the ground beef on medium heat, to it add the salt, black pepper and 7 spices. Sprinkle the ground beef on top of hummus. In another pan, melt the butter and add the pine nuts and brown on low heat until lightly browned, sprinkle on top of ground beef and hummus. On top of the pine nuts sprinkle the parsley and drizzle the olive oil. Serve with pita or toasted pita chips.

Our barking dachshund woke me up out of a deep sleep this morning — barking at a dog barking somewhere outside. She’s a cranky old doggie this morning, and I’m just sort of sitting here sipping my coffee in a sleepy coma at the moment, trying to shake myself out of this stupor. Hate that.

LOL — that’s hilarious! We’re the victims of our own efforts. *G*

Waccamaw | Saturday March 14, 2009 06:00 am 28

Not fair that y’all should have to worry about it when it’s all of us pups out here in internet land who benefit so much from everything you do….you shouldn’t ever hesitate to ask when the need is there. *smooch*

Off in quest of pansies and other gardening stuff. See everyone later…..

dmac | Saturday March 14, 2009 06:00 am 29

Wow — sounds like you’ve been doing some great planning. There really is nothing like a fresh, sun-warmed tomato just from the vine in your own garden, is there? With a little fresh mozzarella, some freshly picked basil, a little sea salt and a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil? Nummy!

which ties right into Sunday’s Book Salon which I do believe a certain Christy Hardin Smith is hosting.

What good timing, when the credit crunch hit our overseas income froze up like the St Lawrence river. We have been living off the kindness of our friends since September 08, but yesterday we got the first of our overseas funds wired to our bank.

We are not out of the woods yet but we decided to add something to your tip jar. It’s not as much as we did in the past but we consider FLD to be an important part of our lives.

behindthefall | Saturday March 14, 2009 06:40 am 63

Christy, if you haven’t done so lately, try a dry run through the donation screens making a PayPal donation. I kept logging in to PayPal and then getting kicked back out to a correction screen which demanded to know my credit card info. Eventually I bulled my way through, but I could have thrown up my hands and quit. PayPal is such a convenient method that I imagine quite a few people try to use it; it would be a shame to make it difficult for them.

Best of luck with the hamster chow!

Click-thru rate is one of the things that ad placement companies look at when they place an ad on a site. If you have a site where folks rarely click thru to the advertisers, it’s not as high up on the “let’s buy an ad there” food chain. More clicks can help to equal more ads, along with good traffic and a whole host of other components that go into that evaluation.

Sorry missed that comment earlier and just caught it in the scroll back thru…

There’s always a good Irish soda bread — easy yet tasty and satisfying. This is a really good one — I make it with half and half unbleached flour and whole wheat flour for more heft. The caraway seeds are optional, too:

http://find.myrecipes.com/reci….._id=410100

3 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup raisins
1/4 cup sugar
1 tablespoon caraway seeds
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1 1/2 cups nonfat buttermilk
Vegetable cooking spray

Combine first 7 ingredients in a large bowl; stir well. Add buttermilk; stir well until a dough forms. Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface, and knead lightly 3 to 4 times. Pat dough into an 8-inch round cakepan coated with cooking spray. Bake at 350° for 45 minutes or until a wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean and bread is golden. Let cool in pan 5 minutes; loosen edges of bread with a knife. Remove from pan; let cool on a wire rack. Cut into wedges.

Here is an ancient Irish recipe I learned from my Great-grandfather:
1] purchase enormous quantities of God’s liquid gift to mankind – beer;
2] purchase green food coloring;
3]mix;
4] drink, dance and tell wild stories.
It goes well with the Super Bowl Carp recipe I shared earlier this year.

I was under the impression, possibly mistaken, that “clicking around” on the ads frequently was, if not illegal, at least strongly frowned upon. So I don’t click on an ad unless I am truly interested (even if I wind up not buying).

And I’m in for $25 this morning.

Here you go, barbara — I found it. Got this out f an old Sunset magazine at my dentist’s office a while back — it’s amazingly tasty with potato soup, too. I use the molasses as the sweetener and it is wonderful:

Kinsale’s Irish Soda Bread

2 1/2 cups whole-wheat flour
About 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
3/4 teaspoon salt
2 cups buttermilk
About 1/3 cup salad oil
2 tablespoons light molasses or corn syrup

1. In a bowl, mix whole-wheat flour, 1/2 cup all-purpose flour, soda, and salt. Add buttermilk, 1/3 cup oil, and molasses; stir until well moistened.

2. Rub a 9-inch cake pan with oil, then dust with all-purpose flour. Scrape the bread batter into the pan and spread level.

3. Bake in a 400° regular or convection oven until bread is well browned and just begins to pull from pan sides, 35 to 45 minutes. Let cool in pan at least 5 minutes. Cut loaf into wedges in pan or invert from pan, turn over, and cut into wedges.

I think that’s if you have a site and you click on the ads all by yourself to up-tick the ad revenue. That is certainly frowned on. But if individual visitors click on the ads when they come on the site, then that’s what ad purveyors want them to do.

It’s whent he ad click-thrus don’t match up with the visitor numbers that you start having questions. I’m just asking folks to click thru the ads when they see one, eh?

got this one at herb club, is moist, very. not like soda bread i have aten. more like loaf bread.
friend used just herbs in it, and cut into rectangles. was really good, but i like the traditional dry one.
i’m trying christy’s next.

Irish Soda Bread

Greased baking sheet
Preheat oven to 350 degrees; bake 1 hour or until golden brown

3 1/4 cups flour
1/3 cup plus 1 T sugar, divided
1 t Calumet Baking Powder
1 t baking soda
1 t salt
——-
1/2 cup (1 stick) cold butter
——-
1 1/3 cups buttermilk
1/2 cup currants or raisins

Mix flour, 1/3 cup of the sugar, baking powder, baking soda and salt in large bowl.

Cut in butter with pastry blender or 2 knives until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

Add buttermilk and currants; mix just until moistened.

Place dough on floured surface; knead 10 times. Shape into round loaf, 2 1/2 inches thick. Place on greased baking sheet.

Cut deep 1/2 inch ‘x’ in top of dough. (across loaf, important little part)
Sprinkle with remaining 1 R sugar.

Bake 1 hour or until golden brown. Cool completely on wire rack. Cut into 16 wedges to serve.

Store leftover bread in resealable plastic bag for up to 24 hours. Or, for longer storage, wrap tightly and freeze up to 2 months. Thaw at room temperature before serving.

Catching up with threads. Neighbor’s #1 pit bull was crusing the ‘hood last night (including my yard). Then #2 pit bull broke its rope leash and joined in the fun. Including galloping into my yard, baring teeth and growling. City ordinance says nothing can/will be done until human (or docile pet) flesh is laid open, bones crushed or….

Would rather wake up to your dachsund, I think.

I have a wonderful recipe labeled “Senate Restaurant” bean soup (I don’t know if it is the genuine stuff they serve there). I use one of those packages of 17 kinds of beans, and in addition to the ham hock add a large clove of garlic (chopped) sliced carrot and quite a bit of chopped onion (recipe says 4, but I only use 2 and that’s plenty), 1/2 lemon, 1-1/2 bay leaves, 3/4 tsp thyme and 6 stems fresh parsley. You’re supposed to tie the lemon, parsley and bay leaves in cheesecloth, but I don’t bother, I just fish them out when the soup is done. At the end you puree 2 cups of beans and add them back to the soup to thicken it, and of course remove the ham from the bone and cut it up. It is one of my favorite winter soups.

Mommybrain | Saturday March 14, 2009 07:22 am 117

Morning, Christy. That picture reminds me of soemthing…

A couple of years ago I got up early to do some writing. It was about 5am, still dark, and I sleepily prepared my cuppa tea. I put the spoon in the jar of honey and lifted. Huh, this is heavy honey, I thought.

As I lifted the spoon, I saw a little mouse, glistening with honey except for the very tip of her nose. I stood there, blinking, wondering wtf. She jumped off the spoon and ran up my arm to my shoulder, where I could hear heavy panting in my ear.

She sat there long enough for me to get my wits back. I took her outside to the chicken coop and stood with my shoulder level to the roof. She jumped off my shoulder and ran across the coop. By the time she reached the other side she was covered in bits of leaf, twigs and acorns.

OK, off to the tip jar. Namaste.

I am seriously thinking I may have to move out of this house, which for various and sundry reasons is a gut-wrencher. But I can’t live like this, and I can’t expose my friends and grands to this. If I call about last night’s episode, they’ll maybe, maybe send someone to chastise the owners, who then become very angry. It’s happened before. David had finally had it with being snarled at in our yard. Debating whether to call. Urgh.

Yep — they know. They’ve been trying to find the riddle in the code on why that is — it’s buried somewhere. We decided to launch without having fixed every little bug because I desperately needed more time flexibility with my FIL living here now, it’s been a little hectic for me.

Hopefully, that one will get resolved soon along with a coupla others.

If you don’t have buttermilk, you can always substitute plain yogurt and/or the same amount of milk with a tablespoon of lemon juice in it to “sour” it. Works great as a substitution and it even works with a powdered milk mixed with water version, too. :)

exactly, Barbara.

And Christy@118, for years I thought that was Jocie Burdick’s recipe, everybody in ND had it, and then I did an internship in Sen. Burdick’s office in DC one college summer and found out everybody everywhere had it…including the Senate cafeteria the staff used. On a student’s tight budget, it was a great summer soup as well.

Doing well as you can when you head out to dialysis three days a week, I suppose. Better than expected for the FIL. It’s been a challenge the last couple of weeks because we’ve all been passing The Peanut’s bronchial/strep ick around, which has meant we’re all more tired and snot-filled than usual. But we’re beginning to see the light at the end of the sniffles, so it’s much better at the moment.
